Windows
Streaming Audio
- Download and install iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/).
- Open iTunes, and on the Advanced menu, click Open Stream.
- Type dorian.fugue.com:8000/TibTrans.mp3 and then click OK. (Note: This is the correct filename even for classes other than the Tibetan Translation class)
- Wait 10 seconds or so, and you will start hearing audio. Until class begins, we will play old recordings so you can test your system.
Streaming Video
Be brave - this is complicated. In order to play streaming video, you need a fairly high-speed internet connection, and you need a reasonably fast computer. If you have those, then by all means give it a try.
- Download Apple's Quicktime player, if you don't have it yet. If you already downloaded iTunes, you got a copy of QuickTime Player with it; if not, go to Apple's QuickTime page (http://quicktime.apple.com) and download QuickTime (might as well download iTunes as well if you feel like it).
- Once you've installed QuickTime (or iTunes), go to the Start menu, hover over All Programs, hover over QuickTime, and then select QuickTime Player. The player should start up and show you ads for some videos they want you to watch.
- Before you do anything, pull down the Edit menu, hover over Preferences, and choose QuickTime Preferences. Select the Advanced tab (upper right corner). You'll see a series of groups of controls in the Advanced tab. The top one is labeled streaming. Under that you'll see Transport Setup with a box to the right of it. Choose Custom....
- A dialog box called Streaming Transport will pop up. For Transport Protocol, choose HTTP. For Port ID choose Custom... and then enter 7500 for the port number. Then click on OK and the dialog box will go away.
- At the bottom of the QuickTime Preferences dialog, click OK again. That dialog will go away as well. Now go to the File... menu and pull down Open URL... A dialog box will come up that says Enter an Internet URL to open:. In the box below, type rtsp://toccata.fugue.com/mystream.sdp and then click on OK.
- Wait about ten seconds, and the video stream should come up. Please check in on the chat before you do this to make sure that the video broadcast is going on - if it isn't, you won't see anything.

- Download and install Trillian Basic (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/) (or if you want, pay them the $25 for Trillian Pro - they've done a nice job on the application, so it's certainly worth doing if you feel like it).
- Once you have downloaded Trillian Basic, install it. It may ask you if you want to install Quicktime 6.0. You do not need to install Quicktime, so say "No", and say "Yes" when it asks if you are sure. When the install is done, there will be a button in the lower right-hand corner of the window labeled Launch. Click on it.
- It will offer you a choice between Trillian Basic and Trillian Pro. You don't need Trillian Pro, so unless you elected to buy it, click on Trillian Basic.
- It asks you for some information about yourself - you have to pick an icon - it doesn't matter which one. Then click next. You will see a window with four checkboxes. Uncheck all of the checkboxes except for IRC. You can add other stuff later if you decide you like Trillian. At this point it will thank you for choosing Trillian. Click OK to indicate that you appreciate this polite salutation.
- You should now see a Trillian Basic window. If you are following these instructions in the web browser, chances are that this window is now underneath your browser window. Alt+Tab won't work to switch to it, so you have to move this window around and bring the other one out from under it and put it somewhere on your screen where it won't get covered up while you continue to follow these instructions.
- Go to the Trillian pulldown menu and select Connections, and then from that menu choose Manage My Connections. This will bring up a nice dialog window where you can add a connection. You can Alt-Tab to that window, thank heaven. Click on the Add a new connection button. A little selector will pop up that says IRC - you have to click on that too.
- You should see a bunch of boxes with greyed-out text. The first box says Server Alias. Click on that box and type Tibetan Webcast.
- The next box says irc.trillian.com::6667. Click on that box and type www.dmes.org:ts0ndr0:10378 (those are zeroes, and not capital Os).
- The next window is your nickname - click on it and type your first name and last name, with no space between them. Do the same in the next two boxes. Now click on Connect.
- At this point if you are running WinXP SP2 (and I hope you are - it's a dangerous Internet out there), and if you have your Windows firewall enabled (which I recommend), you will see a security dialog box asking you if you want Trillian Basic to be able to use the network. Tell it to allow Trillian to use the network.
- Close the account management window (click on Close).
- Go back to the little Trillian Basic window and look at it closely. You chose an icon, which you should see, and to the right of it should be your name. Under your name it should say Connected. Below that, to the far left, is a little dimple-like button. Click on that button.
- A new menu will appear. At the bottom of the menu is the choice to join a channel. A dialog box will pop up asking you what channel to join. Type in tibtrans. A very small window will pop up. Make it bigger. This is your chat window. You will see a few status messages in the chat window.
Macintosh
Streaming MP3
- You probably already have iTunes on your computer. If not, download and install iTunes (OS X) (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) or iTunes (OS 9) (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120073).
- Open iTunes, and on the top menu bar, click Advanced, and then click Open Stream.
- Type dorian.fugue.com:8000/TibTrans.mp3 and click OK. (Note: This is the correct filename for all DM webcasts and not just the Tibetan Translation class.)
- Wait 10 seconds or so, and you will hear the audio. Until class begins, we will play old recordings so you can test your system.
Streaming Video
Be brave - this is complicated. In order to play streaming video, you need a fairly high-speed internet connection, and you need a reasonably new Mac. If you have those, then by all means give it a try. Make sure you are running a current version of QuickTime.
Now go to the Applications folder and double click on QuickTime Player. The player should start up and show you ads for some videos they want you to watch. Before you try to play a stream, pull down the QuickTime Player Menu and select QuickTime Preferences.
Now go to the Advanced Tab (upper right corner). You'll see a series of controls in the Advanced tab. The second one from the top one is labeled Transport Setup with a chooser to the right of it. Choose Custom....
A dialog box will come up. For Transport Protocol, choose HTTP. For Port ID choose Other and then enter 7500 for the port number. Then click on OK and the dialog box will go away.
Now hit Command-Q to get out of System Preferences, and choose QuickTime Player again from the Dock. Now go to the File menu and pull down Open URL... A dialog box will come up that says Movie URL:. In the box to the right, type rtsp://toccata.fugue.com/mystream.sdp and then click on OK.
Wait about ten seconds, and the video stream should come up. Please check in on the chat before you do this to make sure that the video broadcast is going on - if it isn't, you won't see anything.

- Download and install Colloquy (http://www.colloquy.info).
- Drag the Colloquy icon into your Applications folder to install it.
- Open Colloquy. Hit Command-1 to open the Connections window. There's a lightning bolt in the upper left corner, which should be labeled New. Click on it.
- You should see a New Connection dialog. There's a little blue button with a downward-pointing black triangle labeled Details. Click on it; the dialog should get bigger.
- For Chat Server, enter www.dmes.org.
- For Username and Nickname, type the first nine characters of your name, without spaces (no nicknames, please). For example, if your name is Lobsang Drakpa, type "LobsangDr".
- In the Real Name text box, type your real name (spaces are OK).
- For Chat Server Port, type 10378.
- For server password, type ts0ndr0 (Those are zeroes, not capital Os.) Click Remember This Connection.
- Click Connect. This should add the connection to the list of connections in the connection window. It may not actually connect.
- To connect, select the connection - click on www.dmes.org in the Connections window. Be careful not to double-click - this will cause you to edit the name of the connection, which isn't what you want.
- Click on Join Room. A dialog will pop up, with a text entry box labeled Chat Room. Type tibtrans into this box, and click Join. A window should pop up that contains a chat session in the class that's being webcast.

The only client I've tried that might work is VLC. However, it will not work correctly behind a NAT. I've tried. I think the problem is a timing bug in the TCP fallback code, but I obviously don't have time to fix it right now. Maybe you have a version that works, though - if so, you shouldn't need to do anything differently than if you didn't have a NAT. The QuickTime instructions above are so complicated because we just cut to the chase and go straight to TCP, but there's no way that I know of to do that in VLC.
If you are not behind a NAT, or you want to see if the bug is fixed in your version of VLC, then just hit Ctrl+N to bring up the network dialog, and type rtsp://toccata.fugue.com/mystream.sdp in the appropriate dialog, and the video should come up.
