Teachers' Bios
trisangma Hlamo A long term practitioner and teacher of Tibetan Buddhism, Trisangma Hlamo is also a translator of Tibetan texts. She has studied meditation and Buddhist philosophy for over ten years under the close guidance of some of the greatest living masters of the East and West. She has completed a three-year solitary retreat and has taught meditation and Buddhist Philosophy in the U.S. and around the world. She currently teaches at Diamond Mountain University and in Tucson. Prior to her great retreat, Trisangma worked as personal assistant to Frances Hesselbein, President and Chair of the Drucker Foundation.
Ven. Jigme Palmo (Elly van der Pas) spent five years in yoga ashrams in India and in the United States, and later received a master's degree in East-West Psychology from the Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. She was ordained as a novice nun in 1991 and fully ordained in 1994. She served as editor of FPMT's Mandala magazine from 1993-1995, and studied with Geshe Michael Roach since that time. Her main teachers have been His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Geshe Lobsang Tharchin, and Geshe Michael Roach. She is a professor at Diamond Mountain University, where she has taught original courses on how to do retreat, and a 5-part series on the Heart Sutra. She has been retreat director at Diamond Mountain retreat center in Arizona since it started in 2000, and has spent nearly three years in solitary retreats.
Ven. Lobsang Chukyi is director of Diamond Mountain. She has been a fully-ordained nun since 2004, and is Geshe Michael Roach and Christie McNally's tour director. She teaches a popular course at Diamond Mountain University on vinaya or the vows that will take you to freedom. She is a popular ACI teacher throughout the world, a professional therapist, and an EBI coach.
Ven. Lobsang Gyelse (aka. Gail Deutsch) has taught and facilitated dharma classes since 1998, and has taught ACI and DM courses since 2000. Together with Susan Stumpf, she developed and taught the popular DMU course on the Buddhist teachings on death. She is temple keeper and events coordinator at Diamond Mountain.
Ven. Sumati Marut (Brian K. Smith), is Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies at the University of California, Riverside, and is the author of several scholarly books and translations based on Sanskrit materials. He has taught Asian Classics Institute courses in Los Angeles since 2000, and has been invited to teach in S. Lake Tahoe, New York, Ireland, and elsewhere. He is presently on the faculty of Diamond Mountain University in Arizona where he teaches Sanskrit, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Yoga Studies Institute and teaches courses on the Sanskrit classics of yoga as part of that organization. He also teaches in the Yoga Philosophy Program at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles.
Bonnie Baptist has been studying Tibetan Buddhism for 9 years with Geshe Michael, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Ribur Rinpoche, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other holy masters in the Gelug tradition. She has served as Spiritual Program Coordinator at Land of Medicine Buddha in California as well as FPMT Regional Coordinator for the Americas. Bonnie holds a Masters degree in Administration of Justice and works as Director of Marketing for a small communications company. She is currently enrolled in the six-year Tantric Course at Diamond Mountain University.
Allison Dey has completed all 18 ACI courses, and has taught them extensively in Tucson. With her husband Jim, she organizes the DM courses in Tucson, as well the debate ground. She has taught in grammer schools, and has a background in theater and as a writer. She feels it is most important for teachers to realize they are responsible for their students' understanding, and the need to care for the students.
Jim Dey has completed all 18 ACI courses, and has taught them extensively in Tucson. With his wife Allison he organizes the DM courses in Tucson, as well the debate ground. He is also a secret writer and poet, surfer, and computer guy.
Robbi Funck has been a student of Geshe Michael and Christie McNally for the last 10 years, and is attending advanced Buddhist studies at Diamond Mountain University. She has also studied with Geshe Gelek of the FPMT, and received teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and other Gelukpa Masters. She works daily on developing her yoga and meditation practice, and is devoted to the practice of service.
Summer Moore has studied and completed all eighteen courses of the Formal Study Program and is deeply knowledgeable in this tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. She is currently taking Tantra from Geshe Michael at Diamond Mountain University. She has taken initiations from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen, Venerable Marut, tantric initiation from both Khen Rinpoche and Geshe Michael Roach. She has a degree in Environmental Science from USC and works as an actress in Los Angeles.
Karl Straub is a graduate of Duke University and studied cognitive science at Teachers College, Columbia University. Karl is a former dolphin communication researcher, competitive swimmer, school teacher, aide to a member of Congress, and resident manager of a retreat center. He currently works as a certified Thai yoga practitioner, business owner, and yoga instructor.
David Stumpf is Dean of DMU, an international ACI teacher, an author of books on history, and holds a Ph.D. in plant biochemistry.
Susan Stumpf is a PA-C (Physician Assistant-Certified) with a Masters Degree and national certification in acupuncture, 18 years of clinical experience, as well as additional training in Hong Kong. She has formally taught ACI classes for over 3 years, and at present teaches at Diamond Mountain university and places beyond.
Jan True has been studying the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism for 5 years. She has completed all but one of the 18 ACI courses, and moved to Tucson recently to study with Geshe Michael Roach and Christie McNally at Diamond Mountain University.
