Je Tsongkapa Mantra Retreat

July 6-15, 2007

Diamond Mountain Temple

Led by Susan & David Stumpf

Thank you for your interest in our Je Tsongkapa Mantra Retreat, July 6-15, 2007, lead by Susan and David Stumpf at Diamond Mountain, Arizona.

The retreat’s first session will begin promptly at 7pm on July 6th. Please arrive in plenty of time to get set up before dinner at 6pm. Our final session will finish by noon on July 15, we will have a meal together then clean up to be ready to leave by 4pm.

Most of this retreat will be done in silence. Participants are expected to complete the full retreat, barring emergencies, of course.

We will be doing our sessions in Diamond Mountain’s main temple and staying in the campground. Participants will need to bring their own tent and bedding, flashlight, water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and other personal items. The temple is cooled by swamp coolers which are drafty, so you will want some kind of wrap to use, despite the summer heat. Evenings are cool even in July.

A vegetarian midday meal, and light supper will be provided each day. Very simple breakfast fare will be available. Tea is plentiful, but not coffee. You might want to wean yourself from your coffee, starting 2 weeks or more before retreat, or bring your own coffee fixings. If you have special food needs, you are welcome to bring them. There is a small amount of refrigerator space available.

There is no charge for this retreat. Participants will need to share in the food expenses, and it would be nice to make an offering to the cook, and to Diamond Mountain for its campground and temple expenses. There will also be an small expense for the course materials, probably $10.00 per notebook.

The temple has plenty of meditation cushions, but we will be doing 4 sessions a day, so comfort is a priority. If you have a favorite and familiar meditation seat, you might want to bring it with you. You will need a mala. Bring loose fitting clothing that you can layer to adjust for temperature variations. Bring enough for the entire retreat so you don’t need to be distracted by doing laundry.

We will be learning to make tormas (offering cakes) and how to close and open a retreat boundary. The following is a list of things that you need to bring with you for learning these new skills:

  • 3 loaves of white bread, 24 oz size. (Any kind, but WonderBread brand works best)
  • Roasting pan, or really large mixing bowl (Aluminum disposable roasting pans work)
  • Basting brush or 1" soft paint brush

Expect to have difficulties during the week or two before you come for this retreat. Don’t let them deter you. It is helpful to so some big virtue in preparation for a retreat. Decide what yours will be, then do it and dedicate it to being able to gain realizations that you need to be able to help the world become a perfect one for everybody.
