Class 2, 14 January 2006
Well, Bert talked about the situation with our fearless DM guardian David Stumpf, and, and, well, uh, the karma clearing for stubborn headedness would take longer than the two days we had between classes.
We opted for the jackhammer! Doug Veenhof collected an electric 60 pound breaker, with bit and chisel from Rental Service Company in Safford. We hauled the breaker and our trusty DM gas powered generator up the steep hillside and got to work.
We have to tell you: it was HARD work. Three of us spotted each other for over three hours, with a few well supplied snack breaks from Aaron. The noise was deafening.
The weight of the unit wearied our forearms as we draggeded the machine 'round the perimeter of the 7' x 5' hole we watched emerge from the solid rock ground below us. Our palms were pounded into putty. Our bodies were wrought with the merciless vibration of this tool as we watched sparks fly.
The bedrock through which we chiseled was a lime- or gypsum-based matrix adhering stone composites. There's no way we could have chiseled this out by hand, it seemed.
Slowly, slowly our relentless chiseling through this bedrock layer broke the solid matrix into rubble that we could easily shovel and chuck out of the hole.
And by the time Kat said her body could take no more of this abuse, oh! and it was getting dark, the goal was accomplished.
