On November 10th several of us walked the wash that runs adjacent to the road leading up past the Caretakers house.

The slide show above shows the areas that need attention at this time.

Slide 1 shows generalized erosion along wash

Slide 2 shows a Gabion beginning to fail right on the edge of the road

Slide 3 shows where Gabion on road edge has already failed

Slide 4 Pipes are becoming uprooted stones tumble as cars pass

Slide 5 Water flow and equipment have blocked some areas and redirected or constricted others. These areas should be maintained so as to direct the flow away from the road where possible.

Slide 6 Banks are seriously undercut along some bends creating dangerous overhangs

Slide 7 This area is well off the road at this time but will continue to erode and cave in if not checked. Redirection of flow could be accomplished by moving gravel and stone from inside of curve to the outside of the curve under the overhang and effectively flattening the curve this could be done by wheel barrow or with the bobcat

Slide 8 grooves cut into road by water flow are easily repaired by placing stones starting with medium to large stones and gradually applying smaller stones to create a smoother surface and a rock filter that will catch the sediment when it rains. This sediment will finish filling the groove.

Slide 9 Ian and Raven have agreed to begin by repairing these groove above and along side the Lama Yurt site.

Slide 10 This area has been caved and needs to be shored up

Some of these problem areas can be corrected fairly easily while some others will require engineering and possibly significant expense.

I am going to Utah for a work shop on dealing with stream bed erosion and will be traveling with Tom Moody PE who is giving the workshop. I will show him these pictures and see what he thinks. David is meeting with the hydrologist on Wendsday and will be able to get his opinions on these areas. It may be necessary to bring in an engineer like Tom to help us design a solution.

I will post an update on this project here next week. Please direct feedback to bartswindow@yahoo.com
